Park, Linda Sue. (2007). “Art class.” from Tap dancing on the roof: Sijo (poems). Illustrated by Istvan Banyai. New York: Clarion.
Introduction
This poem reminds us of the freedom of art and language. Begin by asking the students to remember a time when they overcame judgements from other people. Follow up with sharing experiences.
Art Class
Keesha says my fish doesn’t look like anything she’s ever seen.
“Flowered fins? Plaid scales? And the tail- tie-dyed wierdo green?”
In this ocean, I am Queen. That tail, my dear, is aquamarine.
-Linda Sue Park
Extension
Set out tissue paper, foamies, stencils, glue and other craft items for this “Art Class.” Have the students make their own magical world, whether it’s under the sea, swinging from branches or whatever they can invent. Remind them they are the kings and queens of their magic places. Read the poem again while the students are working.
